Ethnic Cosmetic Surgeries & Mass Media

perfect : chic sassy blog and illustration design

OMG!!! I watched a documentary on ethnic surgeries last night and I am flabbergasted by what people need to go through to fit in to society!!! Bone sawing to have a perfect facial oval, cutting eyelids to have Caucasian double eyelids, using products filled with steroids to have lighter skin, these are just a few examples discussed in the show!

What really scared me is that parents often feel the need to force these surgeries on their children just so they can get the most out of life like a decent job. When did looking good for an interview turn into cosmetic surgery rather than proper clothes, a nice haircut and well chosen makeup??? Now, don't get me wrong, I understand to a certain degree since I've always been on the heavy side and yes I am not naive enough to not have notice that some job interviews in my life would have gone better if I were a size 0!!! But, there's a world of difference between going on a diet and going under a scalpel!!! Loosing weight doesn't change who I am but getting rid of physical traits such as a flat nose or the color of skin does! It's completely insane and should not be necessary!!!

Why as it become necessary? The documentary brought up the point that mass media is primarily White/Caucasian and thus becomes the visual standard of what it means to be human, therefore, making everything else sub-human!!! Hence, the need for cosmetic surgery, simply to feel human!!!

I believe there's an easier solution and it lies with people like me: graphic designers, artists, casting directors, writers, modeling agencies, and so forth, to choose to diversify the human image in mass media. You heard me, it's a choice!!! And, why hasn't it been done before? Well, as a graphic designer, we gear ads, logos, posters... either towards a specific public or a general one and in many countries like my own the general public is still considered to be primarily White or Caucasian... it's the easy/lazy road, I'll admit to that!!!

So in an effort to change this awful trend, I will now create more illustrations containing characters from various ethnicities!!!  It won't even be a hardship since I have always enjoyed receiving requests from customers to have their characters look like them. It's fun and challenging to draw different bone structures, eye shapes, hair type...

Revisiting the past

Before    |    After
This week I was so lucky to be asked to remodel one of my very first blog designs that I created 7 years ago. Tara has liked the design so much she's never changed it and still she wanted the same but with a fresher more modern look to it. Knowing that one of my design withstood the test of time makes me very happy, specially in such a ephemeral medium as the web!

While redrawing the main character, I realized how much I have improved over the years, my drawing skills of course but also my computer techniques and illustrator skills. It felt very rewarding to see for myself how much I have grown!!!

It was also a little hard too , I kept wanting to outdo myself to make certain it was better than before and yet still keeping with the style of the original.  A very fun challenge!!! Thank you Tara!

Go visit her over at When Tara Met Blog she's been blogging for 10 years and has loads to say about life and the adventures of parenting twins!
